On the evening of September 21, 2024, a severe thunderstorm tore through southwestern Vernon and northern Crawford counties, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. At 5:20 PM CDT, the National Weather Service reported the storm was 8 miles south of Viroqua, moving east at 30 mph. With wind gusts of 60 mph and quarter-sized hail, the storm caused significant damage to vehicles, rooftops, and trees across rural areas such as Horrigan Ridge, Rush Creek, Mount Zion, and Rolling Ground.
